Trailing Stop: How It Works and When It Hurts More Than It Helps

Trailing stop mechanics in MetaTrader, client-side vs server-side trailing, choosing the step, and why volatile markets turn it into a profit shredder.

A trailing stop is a stop-loss that follows price at a fixed distance and never moves backwards. While the trade runs in profit it tightens; once price turns, it stays put and eventually closes the position.

Where it runs

MetaTrader's built-in trailing runs client-side. Close the platform or lose your connection and it stops moving, leaving the stop wherever it last was. For multi-day strategies that makes it near-useless without a VPS.

Server-side trailing is executed by the broker and always runs. Not every broker offers it — check the account terms.

Choosing the step

Too tight is the classic mistake. Markets breathe: an ordinary pullback inside a trend easily eats 30–50% of the daily range. If your step is smaller than that, you get closed on the first breath.

Rule of thumb: no less than one ATR of the timeframe you trade. On EUR/USD H1 that is usually 15–25 pips; on H4, 40–60.

When to leave it off

  • In a range. Price oscillates and trailing closes you at nearly every turn.
  • Around news. A volatility spike takes out the tightened stop before the real move begins.
  • On small targets. At 1.5R, trailing shrinks results more often than it grows them.

A reasonable compromise: bank part of the position at a fixed target and trail the remainder.

Frequently asked questions

Does a trailing stop work with the terminal closed?

The built-in MetaTrader one does not — it lives in the platform. Server-side trailing exists at some brokers and inside expert advisors; check the account specification.

What trailing step should I use?

No tighter than 1 ATR of your working timeframe. Anything narrower turns trailing into a machine for premature exits.

Is trailing better than a fixed take-profit?

In a trend, yes — it lets you stay to the end of the move. In a range a fixed target is almost always better.
